The Sound in the Country is even Cleaner than the Air at Frazier's Studio at Puck's Farm.
Straight up Highway 400, about a half hour north of Toronto, head west on Highway 9, then south on Main Street, there you'll find Schomberg, where it's a different world. It's only 25 minutes from Toronto. Accommodations can be arranged.
The population's just under two thousand. The main street has an orange feed mill at one end and a gas station at the other. In between you've got three stop signs, four churches, a library (only open in the afternoons), the general store (built as a feed mill in 1884), a bank, a post office and a pub in what was once a Victorian mansion.
Further down the road, turn south onto Concession 11 there you'll find us, the world renowned Puck's Farm. One hundred and seventy acres worth of real working farm, an assortment of critters, ponies and hay rides, pick your own fruits and vegetables and lots of clean air, not to mention, one of the best recording studios in North America.
My Studio at Puck's Farm a perfect throwback to a quieter, more realistic time when life was more... analog, as I like to say.
A good room is one of the most important components of the recording art. Mine is all 150-year-old elm, ancient drumlin stone, and 28' high ceilings - EXTRAORDINARY for drums, live off the floor and "in concert" recording. A PETROF grand piano, C-3 organ with Leslie, EMT plates, GREAT mic collection (M49, U67, C800G, BK-5, etc.), Studer 2" tape machine, Classic Neve and MCI consoles, 24-bit hard disc editing, EXPERIENCED ears & relaxed setting. (See my toolbox)
My Control Room is home-like and comfortable; extremely conducive to listening and concentration. When there's a session going on it is not unusual to find one of our resident guinea fowl loitering around outside the glass door that leads to the barnyard. Great ears, gone a fowl. There's also a kitchen and a lounge and of course one hundred and seventy acres for relaxation when you need it.
"What a wonderful, remarkable place in which to create music," remarked a producer recently, after finishing a project here. Adjectives such as warm, burnished, deep and clean abound among those who've used the studio. (See list of artists) But, as you are well aware, studios are subjective. I think the best way to find out how terrific the room sounds is to come up and hear it for yourself.
In fact, let me take the opportunity, right now, to extend a warm invitation; visit my studio, to hear and see for yourself. We'll tell you all about the gear, provide info about equipment rentals, and so on. Call 1-800-621-9177.
What You'll Get Is:
a great sounding room, built, tuned and fretted over with the player in mind
great ears that come with taste, a track record and expertise producing and recording music of all shapes and sizes
real country hospitality providing a unique and refreshing atmosphere in which to create.
Frazier Mohawk born Barry Friedman in Los Angeles, California in 1941, attended Happy Valley boarding school run by Krishna Murti and Aldous Huxley. In retrospect, he feels this period had much to do with the direction the rest of his life took. As the twig is bent, so grows the tree, so to speak. (click here for rest of bio...)
Walter Sobczak began his career in music in the early 1980's as bassist for the popular pre-alternative band The Sturm Group. To give you an idea of the style of music, the band opened for artists such as The Cult, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Flipper, Killing Joke, Screaming Blue Messiahs, and The Cramps.
